A Day in the life span: Visiting High Schools

A Day in the life span: Visiting High Schools

Hello world! As a member that is new of blog team, we am so excited to share numerous of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. once I communicate with my buddies and household about my job, they frequently ask questions like ‘what do you are doing on an everyday foundation?’ or ‘do you have to work in the summer?’ I’m hoping that through my monthly additions to this weblog, you will get an improved concept of what we do each day as admission counselors.

So allow’s begin with the present. This i woke up at the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA morning. My very first visit began at 7:45 am. That might sound early with a, reasonable to others, but I can let you know, this morning at 7:45 am, we ended up being tired (7:45 am in VA feels like 3:45 am in CA…oy.) The truth is, my journey from Los Angeles was expected to get to Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (become exact.) But instead, due to a cockpit that is wet (I kid you maybe not,) my trip was delayed three hours. Luckily, my very first school visit today constantly has coffee waiting for me, and I was particularly appreciative today (Thanks Sheila!) Although i give about a 30 moment presentation to students when I visit, at this school it’s a new format which consists mostly of me answering questions. Thankfully the learning students came prepared. They asked great questions and I think we just stuttered a few times.

I’d time to kill before my visit that is second and found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. I stopped for many breakfast and a coffee refill. In a world that is perfect arrive about 10 mins just before a visit, but often I’m about 15 to 20 minutes early. Fortunately, my car’s air conditioning kept me cool while I ate my bagel and drank my latte. I was also able to chat with some counselors which is always a highlight of my day today. University counselors are always high in details about students, their schools, and usually life as a whole. It reminds me of my high school days where I spent a complete lot of time on my counselor’s couch.

Just How coffee that is many is it possible to find in this picture?

My visit that is third today to a school i have never visited before. There were about eight students present and one had been even using a USC t-shirt. This student, let us call him Brandon, said about his recent stop by at campus so we had a moment to gush over how USC that is pretty is. I adore sharing common USC experiences with pupils, specially whenever i am away from home.

Finally, between my third and fourth visit this morning, I was in a position to grab a 6′ veggie delight as I drove to the following school that is high. A nice reminder of the relationships I continue to build at each school upon checking in, my picture from last year’s visit appeared in their computer.

After my fifth and final visit today, we returned to my hotel, debriefed my day in the form of records and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch through to some work. My first instinct is often to check my email. Oh look! I acquired a message from Brandon I mentioned thanking me for my visit and asking a question about something. Love when that happens!

I really hope to satisfy many of you as We continue my travels! If there’s other things you want to know about our experiences visiting your school that is high feel free to leave questions within the comment section and I am going to do my far better return to you soon!

Fight In!

Mythbuster: we need certainly to show the admission counselors that USC is my top choice

The Myth: Attending college fairs, visits and tours will increase my likelihood of admission.

The Verdict: Not at USC.

Every late August/early September, there are 5 or so emails in my inbox each morning because of the topic ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have the same format that is general. ‘Hello Jessica- simply wished to let you know I play baseball and I can’t wait to apply to USC that I go to ABC High School. I’ve always wished to be considered a pupil in the Marshall School of Business.’ Ok great, but exactly what am we supposed to express? Good luck with your baseball period? Every winter, I get similar emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me personally how their first semester went, they got the role that is lead the springtime musical, and that USC continues to be their very first option. Awesome, but chances are I currently saw your senior grades (or will soon) year.

At USC, we do not monitor students’s interest outside for the application that is actual admission decision purposes. Attending our programs is a wonderful method to find out more about USC, but planning to an event or sending e-mails like those I described will not raise your chances of admission to the university.

As admission counselors, it’s true with any help you may need that we are your main contact as you go through the admission process at USC and we are happy to assist you. However, pupils just benefit from trying to royal vegas slots us they can’t find the answer online if they have specific questions- especially questions to which. I do believe students often confuse this role and make the assumption they have to email us and start a conversation so that you can have a shot at admission.

So how will you show us that you’re interested in USC? as opposed to investing your time emailing us with updates, it is in your absolute best interest to use that point working on your response to the application question ‘Describe your academic interest and exactly how you want to pursue them at USC.’ You should talk about specific resources and opportunities you would like to take advantage of at USC. in the place of emailing us your list of activities, fill down the game Summary completely. A thoughtful and very carefully assembled application stands out a great deal more than an introduction e-mail or an invite to coffee.

Bear in mind that some educational schools may track demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all pupils to reach out to them, while other people may expect students within the area that is local check out campus. The thought of demonstrated interest differs, so you need to always ask a college if and the way they track interest and if it is factored into an admission choice.

At the conclusion of the day, we do wish to see that you’re interested in USC and that you’re seriously considering being a student here. The easiest way so that you can articulate this interest is through your application.
